As to why both diagnosis and treatment for Black women with endometriosis is lagging behind that of white women, experts say there are potentially many contributing factors. “Diagnostic bias, lack of proper referrals, lack of access to specialists, inequities in treatment options, ignoring a patient’s description of pain, and ‘normalization’ of symptoms in patients of color may play a significant role in these findings,” says Kecia Gaither, M.D., a double board-certified physician in OB/GYN and Maternal Fetal Medicine at NYC Health and Hospitals System in New York City.
