Bidets can reduce the risk of developing urinary tract infections, improve hygiene, and ease the pressure and pain associated with the use of toilet paper for people who have a medical condition such as hemorrhoids or itchy anus, according to Dr. Kecia Gaither, the Director of Perinatal Services/Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in the Bronx. Bidets allow users to wash without using much toilet paper, and these special seats are popular in Japan – about 77% of Japanese households have a bidet. In the past, bidets weren’t popular in Western countries, but the 2020 pandemic’s toilet paper shortage may have caused more people to consider alternatives.
