Women should take supplements during pregnancy, and in particular, I always recommend vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for cardiovascular and brain health, as well as acting as an immunity booster, which is essential for mom and baby during pregnancy. Vitamin D also decreases the incidence of preterm labour. Vitamin D is produced in the skin in conjunction with sunlight and is beneficial to bone development. As melanin inhibits vitamin D production, individuals of colour are at increased risk of vitamin D deficiency, making it increasingly important for women of colour to supplement with vitamin D during pregnancy. It’s generally recommended to take between 1000-2000 IU daily.
