“The genesis of preterm labor is one that is multifaceted,” said Dr. Kecia Gaither, Director of Perinatal Services at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln. “The fact that an increase in preterm labor was noted at an increased rate among women given the vaccine suggests that some unknown factor was ‘turned on’ or perhaps ‘turned off,’ resulting in the onset of preterm labor.” Dr. Gaither noted that identifying underlying risk factors, such as infections, immune-compromising conditions like HIV or diabetes, or nutritional deficiencies like Vitamin D deficiency, would have provided valuable context for understanding the risk of preterm labor. She recommends that fellow OB-GYNs screen for these risks, and address deficiencies to optimize maternal health.
