First things first: Let’s get into the three different types of lube, which are water-based, oil-based, and silicone-based. The best all-purpose lubricant is water-based, which is the only one that’s safe to use with condoms and sex toys, and the easiest to clean up afterward. “Water-based lubes are well recommended, as oil-based lubes can degrade the latex of condoms and increase the risk of pregnancy and STIs,” explains Dr. Kecia Gaither, MD, a double board-certified physician in OB/GYN and Maternal Fetal Medicine. Aloe vera-based lubes (which are all the rage rn) and other natural formulas are also a clean, safe bet for vaginas.
