Most anal STIs can be tested for by culturing anal swabs, says Kecia Gaither, MD, MPH, FACOG, who is double board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal fetal medicine and is director of perinatal services at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln. This usually involves using a mini Q-tip-like device to swab the anal canal or anal opening.
