“Hypertension is seen at a higher rate among menopausal women,” says Kecia Gaither, M.D., the director of perinatal services/maternal fetal medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in New York City. Research shows that while blood pressure is typically lower in premenopausal women than in men, after menopause that ratio changes and more women develop the condition. In fact, an estimated 41% of women develop hypertension after menopause.
