Physiologically, hormones seem to be at the root of morning sickness. The hormonal shifts which occur in early pregnancy—notably increases in hormones like human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), estrogen, and a protein hormone called GDF15 which stimulates nausea pathways in the brain—are major contributors to morning sickness, says Kecia Gaither, MD, MPH, MS, MBA, FACOG, FAIUM, the director of perinatal service and maternal fetal Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in the Bronx.
