PID, or pelvic inflammatory disease, is an infection of the female reproductive organs, usually as a result of sexually transmitted bacteria spreading to the uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries.
According to Dr. Kecia Gaither, M.P.H., F.A.C.O.G., double board-certified in OB-GYN and Maternal Fetal Medicine, Director of Perinatal Services at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, those with PID may have a fever and abdominal pain. “The ovaries may develop abscesses which will require hospitalization and possible surgery for treatment,” Dr. Gaither adds.
